« "Voices" a good show, but not as good as the first two »

Rating:3 out of Fordyce (Very Good)

I was once again treated to a high-quality show at the Williamston Theatre. Home: Voices from Families of the Midwest by Annie Martin and Suzi Regan is on stage until June 13.

This is the final installment of WT’s “Voices” series. It began with Maidens, Mothers and Crones, celebrating the women in our region. Next was Voices from Men of the Midwest, featuring those “guy things” that make us special, and this time we looked in on families.

Like its predecessors, this show was carefully honed from stories that had been told to the writers and then placed in a well-written series of vignettes that go together.

This show stars John Lepard, who indeed deserves the term star. He is joined by Maggie Meyer. Sandra Birch, and (in his first professional role) Hazen Cuyler.

There are some very good scenes as the four actors change roles and ages right before your eyes. The dinner time sketches are priceless, as is the “photo” scene.

This show is well written and very enjoyable, but unlike the first two shows in this trilogy, this one adds music. There were some full length songs and guitar interludes between the scenes. The guitar player, one Nick Hinz, is perched on a treehouse built into the very clever set. He is supposed to announce the scenes and strum along, which he does, but I thought he looked bored and didn’t seem to notice or care that there were actors below him and an audience in front of him. During the performance I saw, he didn’t wait for the audience to stop applauding before speaking and I still have no idea where the first act took place.

But don’t let one miscast musician keep you from this one. It has enough plusses to give it a very good three out of Fordyce.
